I was scootering past when he caught my eye. I stopped and walked over and watched for a while. He was fully immersed in enjoying the attention of the birds, looking for (and receiving) that connection. He was feeding them, being so careful and gentle. There was this immense feeling of vulnerability around him. As I started bending down to take a photo of him, he looked up and gave me an open and direct smile. I smiled right back in recognition. In that moment we were kindred spirits.
